Bco 1-24 IN - Afghanistan War
Corey R. Smathers, 22, of Jacksonville, was a United States Army soldier who answered the call to serve from a young age—committing his life to something greater than himself.
After a semester at Hocking College, Corey enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to serve with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, stepping into a role that required courage, discipline, and commitment to the men beside him.
Following his deployment, Corey returned home to spend time with family before reporting back to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.
He was known by those closest to him as someone who valued family deeply. He spent time with his parents and shared a strong bond with his nieces, Laken and Elliana. He is also the father of a son, Cylan Reid Smathers, born on April 12.
On March 2, Corey was found deceased in his vehicle in Fairbanks, Alaska. His death has been ruled a suicide.
Corey’s remains were returned home on March 11, where he was honored by a procession of law enforcement and veterans—men and women who understand the weight of service and the bond shared by those who wear the uniform.
