Suicide Prevention for Veterans and First Responders: Healing The Hero’s Mission with Task Force Pineapple

Introduction

Suicide prevention remains one of the most critical issues affecting veterans and first responders. These heroes dedicate their lives to serving others yet often struggle with unseen wounds that can lead to tragic outcomes. At Healing the Hero, we are committed to breaking this cycle by providing innovative trauma interventions that build resiliency and restore hope. Through our partnership with Task Force Pineapple and other nonprofits, we are extending our reach and impact, ensuring that those who serve are never left behind. https://tfpineapple.org/

Through dedicated efforts, we focus on the healing of our heroes.

We provide resources that actively promote healing for veterans and first responders.

Our mission centers around healing and providing emotional support.

At Healing the Hero, we prioritize recovery, recognizing it as a fundamental aspect for our heroes.

Through our specialized programs, we focus on addressing the emotional and psychological scars that many veterans and first responders endure, by allowing them to neurologically release the neural pathways connecting the emotions with the memory, leading to effective and quick memory reconsolidation.

On March 5, 2025, we had the privilege of discussing these crucial issues on Scott Mann’s Podcast, to be aired May 6, 2025, where we highlighted our Hurricane Helene relief efforts in North Carolina, our groundbreaking Trauma Resiliency Protocol-Peer Rescue (TRP-PR) training for faith-based leaders, and the exciting research ahead using evoke neuroscience qEEG brain scans to measure pre- and post-intervention progress. These initiatives exemplify our commitment to rapid response, trauma recovery, and long-term resilience-building for communities affected by disasters. https://evokeneuroscience.com/

The Suicide Crisis Among Veterans and First Responders

The statistics on suicide within the veteran and first responder communities are staggering:

  • An estimated 17 veterans die by suicide every day in the United States (VA, 2024).
  • First responders, including police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, experience higher suicide rates than the general population due to the cumulative trauma exposure.
  • The emotional burden of service, coupled with PTSD, moral injury, and lack of effective trauma processing, contributes significantly to mental health struggles.

Understanding these challenges, Healing the Hero and Task Force Pineapple have taken a proactive stance by offering cutting-edge training and trauma resiliency programs to those on the front lines.

Dan Jarvis’ Story and Meeting Scott Mann

We recognize that healing is a journey that requires ongoing support and understanding.

Dan Jarvis, founder of 22ZERO, Healing the Hero and Tactical Resiliency USA, served as a U.S. Army Sergeant First Class and later as a Deputy Sheriff in Florida. After deployments to Iraq (2006-2007) and Afghanistan (2011-2012), Dan faced his own battles with PTSD, moral injury, and suicidal thoughts and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). His personal experience with trauma ignited his passion to help others heal, leading him to establish trauma-focused initiatives for veterans, active duty, Gold Star Families, first responders, and their families.

By integrating supportive practices into our training, we empower these heroes to reclaim their lives.

In 2018, Dan had a pivotal meeting with Scott Mann, retired Green Beret and founder of Rooftop Leadership and Task Force Pineapple. Scott’s work in human connection and storytelling became a catalyst for expanding trauma recovery efforts, and their collaboration led to the development of large-scale healing initiatives. Following the foundation of 22Zero, the organization Dan co-founded with his ex-wife Dr. Gwinnell Brant, Dan worked closely with Scott as a coaching client for a year, refining his leadership skills and strategic outreach, storytelling. Dan would go on to develop several nonclinical interventions for trauma intervention through learning everything he could in the field of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), certifying as an NLP Master Practitioner.

Scott’s mentorship and network helped propel 22ZERO, and the Trauma Resiliency Protocol (TRP) into a broader movement, ultimately facilitating the healing of over 10,000 individuals through structured trauma interventions through peer application, and training of licensed professionals.

Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts: Supporting First Responders in North Carolina

When Hurricane Helene struck North Carolina, the aftermath left devastation not only in infrastructure but also in the emotional well-being of first responders and affected communities. Our team, in collaboration with Task Force Pineapple, mobilized quickly to provide trauma relief, resilience training, and emotional support to those on the ground.

We aim to facilitate healing in communities affected by trauma.

Key highlights of our intervention:

Our interventions are designed to facilitate healing while addressing the unique challenges of first responders.

  • Immediate deployment of trauma response teams to assist first responders dealing with post-disaster stress, a Quick Reaction Force (QRF).
  • Partnering with local emergency services to address the psychological toll of prolonged rescue and recovery operations.
  • Conducting Trauma Resiliency Protocol-Peer Rescue (TRP-PR) training to help first responders and faith-based leaders process trauma in real-time.

As part of our commitment to long-term healing, we also provided mental health support and peer-driven trauma intervention strategies to ensure that those affected by the storm had the tools to recover emotionally and psychologically.

Training Faith-Based Leaders in Trauma Resiliency Protocol-Peer Rescue

A major milestone of our work in North Carolina was the successful training of 11 church leaders, pastors, and lay ministers in Trauma Resiliency Protocol-Peer Rescue (TRP-PR). This initiative bridges the gap between mental health professionals and community-based spiritual leaders, empowering them to provide trauma-informed care and healing to their congregations.

The training focused on:

  • Recognizing signs of trauma in community members and first responders.
  • Implementing TRP-PR techniques to de-escalate crisis situations.
  • Fostering safe spaces for veterans and first responders to share their experiences.
  • Creating a sustainable peer-support network within faith-based organizations.

Through our programs, we are helping heroes navigate their paths to healing.

By equipping these leaders with trauma-informed skills, we are ensuring that communities have local, trusted resources to help those struggling with post-traumatic stress and suicidal ideation.

Our commitment to recovery ensures that veterans and first responders receive the support they need to thrive.

Upcoming Research with Evoke Neuroscience qEEG Brain Scans

This training is crucial for fostering healing environments where veterans and first responders can thrive.

One of the most exciting developments in our work is our upcoming research collaboration with Evoke Neuroscience to conduct qEEG brain scans before and after trauma interventions. This groundbreaking study aims to provide scientific validation for the effectiveness of our Trauma Resiliency Protocol. You can see some of our data here. https://healingthehero.org/research/

What this research will measure:

  • Changes in brain activity pre- and post-TRP-PR intervention.
  • Reduction in hyperactive stress responses linked to PTSD and trauma.
  • Improved neural connectivity and cognitive function after resiliency training.

Our programs focus on the healing journey of every hero.

With real-time data, we can refine our trauma interventions and continue improving the support we provide to veterans, first responders, and community leaders.

Rapid Response to Communities Affected by Disasters

One of Healing the Hero’s strengths is our ability to quickly respond to communities affected by both natural and man-made disasters. Whether it’s hurricanes, mass casualty events, or other crises, our team has developed a streamlined approach to deploy, assess, and intervene with trauma recovery strategies that work.

Our focus on healing through community engagement is vital for long-term recovery.

Key Elements of Our Rapid Response Model:

  1. Mobilization within 24-48 hours of a disaster event, or the conclusion of the event.
  2. Collaboration with local first responders, emergency services, and faith-based organizations.
  3. Implementation of TRP-PR strategies to address trauma at its root.
  4. Integration of long-term resiliency programs to sustain recovery efforts.
  5. Use of neuroscience-backed methodologies to measure progress and refine interventions.

Our partnership with Task Force Pineapple enhances our ability to scale these efforts, ensuring that trauma-affected individuals receive immediate and effective support.
